My story
Hi there! Welcome to this website.
I am Dr. Sam Nakhwa DDS, BDS, a practicing dentist based in Washington, USA. After I completed my BDS from India, Mumbai and I worked there for a couple years. Like most BDS graduates I faced the big question - What next after BDS? Eventually I moved to the US to be with my husband. Then started the whole saga of applying to Dental schools in USA.
I eventually decided and completed my DDS in the New York University College of Dentistry USA . I have faced my share of ups and downs throughout my dental journey. I found all of the information after reading a lot of websites and meeting counselors and taking classes and talking to friends and seniors. It was very overwhelming to start with and it was all over the place. All the information was so haphazard. I have gone through this extremely confusing phase myself.
That's why I created a Youtube channel and this website for you, with a goal of sharing practical tips and experiences so that you can save valuable time and finances by avoiding some of those mistakes. Here you can find detailed and interesting stuff about all things related to dentistry right from how to join a dental school to how to become practicing dentist in USA. I keep adding stuff regularly.
As a teen, I saw my brother get accepted into one of the best medical schools in Mumbai. Where as me, I always loved art. My parents in fact encouraged me to pursue art or architecture as a career choice at the time since I was amazed by beautiful architectural sites. I grew up amongst a family of doctors, listening to random medical jargon all the time. My father was the first doctor in his small village. Then joined my mom, aunt and brother. All their life my parents have worked in a small town- Uran, in India where me and my brother grew up. I was amazed at my parents' work with helping people. On some occasions when we met some of their patients, we would get to hear stories about how their little kid was saved or how they were in dire need and my parents helped them without charging a dime. That is why I made a decision to become a doctor. I learnt to treat patients without exceptions and expectations from my parents.
I specifically wanted to be a dentist as we tend to have to work on small areas needing artistic qualities. I am the first dentist in my family. Most of the MDs in my family felt being a dentist was easy as it had less number of emergencies and better family life.
But boy have they seen how busy it can get after they had one dentist in the family. They realized that dentistry is not just about jabbing people for taking teeth out but rather how our mouth is a gateway to our overall health. We cannot forget that the smile is the first thing that people notice. It is an equally important part of the facial esthetics. Soon my family started noticing peoples smiles in the real sense. Both my parents had major dental work done in order to help their dentition.
